Moss Point River Fest

Moss Point, MS August 19, 2008... The Moss Point riverfront comes to life on Saturday, August 30th with music, arts and crafts, food, community booths and displays and much more. This free event scheduled for 12 Noon-8p will happen rain or shine and will provide entertainment for the entire family.

Title sponsor for the event is BP of Moss Point. Other sponsors include the City of Moss Point,  the Jackson County Board of Supervisors, Navigator Credit Union, VT Halter Marine, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Signal International Mississippi Export Railroad, Cable One, Beau Rivage Resort and Casino, Hancock Bank of Moss Point, The Shed, CupitSigns, The Blood Center, Boys & Girls Club of Jackson and George Counties and WKFK-TV.

A giant barge from VT Halter Marine will serve as the stage for the day, docked along the river in Downtown Moss Point. A variety of music will be performed by various entertainers from around the area. Coconut Dave will offer tropical and reggae featuring his steel drums. Pop and classic rock favorites will be played by The Unexpecteds, a group of talented teenagers from Ocean Springs. Veteran Blues and R&B group, Barbara and Company will entertain the crowd as well as country and bluegrass favorites The Mule Skinners and country 14 year- old sensation Samantha Landrum from Laurel who has won several talent competitions around the state including the Coalgate Country Showdown and the Country Star competition at this year’s Coast Coliseum Country Cajun Crawfish Festival.

The headliners for River Fest will be Mobile’s Tip Tops Show Band from 5-8pm.Their musical emphasis is "60's", "Motown" and "Rhythm & Blues." The 4 Tops, Otis Redding, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye are just a sample of the artists The Tip Tops cover. Mix in some "50's" from Elvis and Sam Cooke and some "80's" from Kool and The Gang and The Commodores and you have three decades of musical history. Beautiful, sensuous, and glittering are just a few words to describe "The Toppettes" which is a show in itself. These young ladies have mesmerized audiences throughout the southeast.

The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and The Pointer Sisters are just a few of the artists "The Toppettes" bring to your venue. The high-energy, fast-stepping brass section (The Dancing Horns)  make The Tip Tops a total entertainment package. Five part harmony, choreography, and costume changes will ensure your audience of a most enjoyable evening. and R&B, blues, Motown and oldies.

But great music isn't the only attraction at River Fest 2008. On display will be a retired M&M NASCAR racer. Kids can actually get inside and have their pictures taken. Families can get free pictures of their kids IN the car! Pictures of festival goes with the car and other festival activities will be posted free for download at www.k99fm.com following the festival. This car has been on display at the Talladega Speedway. There will also be a free registration for tickets to Talladega for the featured NASCAR event in October. 

Oasis Cycles of Jackson, MS is bringing the "Katrina Bike" to River Fest. Raffle tickets will be sold and the bike will be given away at a later date. Proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity. The bike is autographed by over 150 celebrities including Jay Leno, Morgan Freeman, Charlie Daniels, Gov. Haley Barbour, and more. Oasis Cycles is a custom shop who builds motorcycles to customer specifications and is owned by Phillip Boler and Mark Boler of Jackson, MS. The motorcycle is a small canvas for custom work and all is open for the eye to see. This is what separates the "cookie cutters" from custom builds and it certainly is evident with the "Katrina Bike" including the picture of Hurricane Katrina on the rear fender and with debris from Katrina scattered over the rest of the bike. It truly is a piece of art you have to see to appreciate. 

River Fest patrons can be a star with a sound and video studio that puts them in the spotlight. Recordings can be made of your performance for a nominal fee. Take the stage and be the star!

The Blood Center of Ocean Springs will host a blood drive during the festival. Donors are encouraged to come and give the gift of life. Other local non-profit organizations and charities will be involved in the event as well. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Jackson and George Counties will sell soft drinks and water as a fund raiser. Moss Point Masonic Lodge #202 will offer the Mississippi Child Identification Program. This comprehensive program provides free child identification to families for their use. Other organizations participating will include the American Cancer Society, and a booth with information on breast cancer awareness.

Children's activities will be available including face painting, a train on the festival grounds, a space walk, activities from the US Army Reserve including a Hummer,  a dog tag machine and an interactive laser shot game.

Arts and crafts vendors range from different varieties including paintings, pottery, jewelry, beads, gift items, health products, collectables, wooden crafts and more.

River Fest also offers great food including the famous BBQ from The Shed, Papa T’s fried catfish and chicken, and other vendors with selections including rib eye steak sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, Mexican food, chicken on a stick, corn dogs, baked items, funnel cakes, snowballs, cotton candy and more
